Volunteer Departments

Public safety is the number one priority of the City’s Volunteer Departments. Many dedicated individuals volunteer numerous hours to protect the residents of Melrose and the surrounding areas.

• City-owned ambulance service established in 1969
• Basic life support (BLS) service licensed through the State of Minnesota
• Department serves 9 cities and 14 townships
• Members are emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and respond to emergency calls and provide care to the critically ill and injured
• Members are appointed by the Council upon recommendation of the Public Safety  Commission
• Department can have up to 30 members

• Fire protection services began in 1884
• Department serves the cities of Melrose, Meire Grove, and Greenwald along with the surrounding rural areas
• Department objectives are to preserve and protect life and property, fire prevention, fire fighting, and rescue
• Members appointed by the Council
• Department can have up to 30 members
  

  Fire Relief Association

  • Formed in 1898
  • Association provides retirement relief and other benefits to association members
  • Any active member of the Fire Department is eligible for membership

• Police Reserve services began in 1972 and was originally called Civil Defense
• Department assists the Police Department in special events, and times of disaster with traffic and crowd control
• Department assists the Police Department at crime scenes to help protect the scene
• Department provides services to the Melrose Area Public School District 740 after school and at sports events
• Members are appointed by the Council upon recommendation of the Public Safety Commission
• Department can have up to 10 members
